Dozens quarantined following school COVID reports

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dozens are in quarantine following a handful of positive COVID tests in Mon County Schools.

Two postive COVID cases at the Mountaineer Middle School have resulted in a 14 day quarantone for more than 60 students. That was the first instance of spread within a school.

At University High School, two positive cases there have another 100 students and one teacher in quarantine.

The West Virginia Board of Education voted to require elementary and middle schools to return to five-day-a-week instruction last month. Grades 8 through 12 were ordered to attend school as long as the county is not in red status.

At the time, statewide COVID czar, Dr. Clay Marsh told board members the return to classrooms would be safe.

“The classroom is a safe place to be,” Marsh said. “The K-8 classroom—there is a tremendous amount of really good data to suggest that it is even a safer place to be than staying in your community.”

About 70 percent of the 12,000 students in Mon County are attending in-person classes.
