Eagle Scout project puts American flag on display in time for Memorial Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Visitors to East Oak Grove Cemetery over the Memorial Day weekend will see the American flag prominently displayed. A Morgantown teen took on a service project to make that a reality. The significance of the location is timely as many will be visiting the graves of service members who’ve passed away.

“There are more veterans that are buried there than any other cemetery in the county,” said County Commissioner Tom Bloom. “They didn’t have a flag. So, it meant something special to the veterans.”

After six months of work and a $4,000 investment from local businesses, White completed the project with landscaping improvement to be elevated to an Eagle Scout.

“It’s buried 5 feet deep and it’s a 30 foot pole. You talk about manual labor! They put their heart and soul into it,” Bloom assessed after seeing it in person.

Thursday, White was part of a small ceremony where Westover VFW members presented a flag for the cemetery.

White is a graduating senior from Morgantown High School.

Bloom, a retired school counselor, said the Eagle Scout’s commitment is encouraging.

“I can’t say enough about Tanner. You don’t really get a chance to talk about the good things going on. But, that is the type of future we will have with people like Tanner.”

Fred Jenkins funeral home donated the East Oak Grove Cemetery flag.
