Fairmont man charged in Gypsy shooting

GYPSY, W.Va. A Fairmont man has been accused of breaking into a home in Gypsy and shooting the owner Monday.

Harrison County sheriff’s deputies initially responded to a report of a burglary around 3:15 p.m. at a home on First Street.

The victim told deputies that Crayton Elza, 27, broke into his home and shot him with a revolver.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. The extent of the injuries is not known.

After transporting the victim, deputies said they encountered Elza in the Gypsy area and detained him for questioning.

Deputies allege Elza slipped into the home through a rear window after the victim did not answer his knocks on the front door.

Elza said the victim was shot in the home during a struggle. Elza then fled the scene and threw the revolver into the river.

Elza has been charged with malicious assault and wanton endangerment. He is being held at the North Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
