Fairmont restarts city manager search

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont city officials have reignited the search for a new city manager following the resignation of Valerie Means in June of 2023.

The city received 32 packages from interested applicants in the first round. After review by a search committee, four finalists were selected and two of those withdrew from the selection process, two others were not selected.

For the second round, a new job description has been developed and the application period will be extended.

Minimum qualifications for the position are:

At least five years of progressively responsible managerial experience at a senior level in a governmental entity (preferably as a City Manager, County Administrator, or similar position at another governmental agency.)
A four-year BA or BS degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Business or a related field or an MBA or MPA in Public/Business Administration from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required.
Strong negotiation, budgetary and team skills are a plus
Willingness to relocate to Fairmont’s corporate limits is required.

The application period will remain open until November 17 at 4:30 p.m. and the search committee is scheduled to have a list of finalists for city council December 21. Second round finalists will be interviewed January 9, 2024.
