Fire investigators in Morgantown believe lightning caused Wednesday evening fire

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Morgantown fire investigators say a lightning strike is the likely cause of a blaze Wednesday in the 200 block of Jefferson Court.

The South High Street Fire Station responded at about 7:42 p.m. to a reported 1st alarm. When firefighters discovered smoke in the attic a 2nd alarm response was called. The fire was under control in approximately 20 minutes.

The fire caused an estimated $35,000 in damages. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters. Nearby witnesses reported a bright flash followed by a loud explosion. Investigators are returning to the scene today for further assessment.
