Former Hazelton C.O. convicted of lying to federal agents

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. – A former U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton correctional officer has been convicted of lying about alleged abuse to inmates, according to United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld.

William Lewis, 34, of Elkins, West Virginia, reported excessive force was being used against inmates in the special housing unit, then denied it in an interview with investigators and then told investigators he did not make any allegation.

Lewis was convicted of two counts of making false statements to a federal agent. The jury acquitted Lewis of a third count of making a false statement.

Lewis faces up to 5 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count.
