Graduation set for this weekend in Mon County

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It’s a landmark weekend for young people about to make their own way.

Over 800 Monongalia County public school students will walk across the stage this weekend to recieve their high school diplomas.

Monongalia County School Superintendent Dr. Frank Devono, finds a lot of positives, not only for this graduating class, but the school system as a whole.

“Our attendence rate is up, our graduation rate is over ninety percent, so we’re doing a lot of right things in order for that to happen.” said Devono.

Monongalia County also boasted students in the graduating class that recieved scholarships from prestigous universities including Harvard, Yale and West Virginia University.

Devono credits a lot of that success to the Mon County School teachers and staff.

“There’s a lot of good things that are happening in the school system because of the teachers and the people that are doing what they need to do to provide what they can for our students.” said Devono.

Even with concerns of students going out of state for college at a larger rate and state economic issues playing a part in funding, Devono believes it doesn’t change the goal of quality education.

“We certainly have some great kids here we wish our economy was as such that a lot of our kids could stay and have great jobs to be able and keep here but we’ll keep working on it and hopefully they’ll be coming back.” said Devono

Clay Battelle and University High will have commencement ceremonies on Friday and Morgantown High will conclude the fesitvities on Saturday.
