Heavy traffic expected in Morgantown this weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Pete Tennant estimates up to 10,000 people will come to Morgantown this weekend for a wide range of events. The Gold-Blue Spring Game, All American Grand Bash, Morgantown High School Prom and the Republican candidate forum at Mylan Park.

West Virginia State Police Corporal Matthew Sternart tells WAJR News people should plan extra travel no matter their destination this weekend and suggests if you don’t need to go, don’t.

“Drive the speed limit, have patience, I think the biggest thing is having patience,” Cpl. Sternart said. “I see a lot of people in a hurry and Morgantown is not a good place to be in a hurry because of the traffic patterns.”

The two biggest events of the weekend will be the Gold-Blue Spring Game and the All American Grand Bash.

“We’re trying to separate those two entities,” Cpl. Sternart said. “For football traffic, utilize I-68 coming across Route 705 and people going to the Grand Bash should use exit 155 at Star City.”

In the event you are pulled over by the police find a safe place to get off the road, turn your car off if possible and place your hands on the steering wheel as the officer approaches. Wait to get documents until asked to produce them by police.

“We just ask for your patience, cooperation and kindness if we stop you,” Sternart said. “If you’re kind with us we’ll be kind back and you’ll likely get out of there with a warning and not a citation.”

Last, Cpl. Sternart said please celebrate responsibly and have a plan if alcohol will be a part of your weekend.

“Driving buzzed is driving drunk,” Sternart said. “If you have one or two beers you could easily be impair so we always ask you to have a designated driver.”
