Increased holiday patrols will be ‘zero tolerance’ this weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– Many will say goodbye to 2022 and hello to 2023 at a party or event, and Monongalia County Sheriff Perry Palmer urges all to use good judgment and be cautious.

“We know New Year’s is a big holiday for a lot of people,” Sheriff Palmer said. “A lot of people come in from out-of-town to see their families, and they’ll be going to gatherings and parties, so we’ll have several more people on the road.”

Palmer advises motorists to be prepared for quickly changing road or traffic conditions and to plan for a designated driver if alcohol is in their plans. Plan additional time for travel and be considerate of people who don’t know the roads in the area.

“Be patient on the roads,” Sheriff Palmer said. “Be aware of your surroundings on the road if you have ice or snow; just be patient and safe.”

Most of all, Palmer said this will be a “zero tolerance” night for those who do come into contact with police. He said if you drink or do drugs and drive, deputies on the road will have no sympathy for you.

“It’s better to be safe; don’t let that chance even be a possibility of happening,” Sheriff Palmer said. “Do the safe thing, and we’ll all have a great New Year’s.”
