Inmate assaulted at FCI Hazelton

HAZELTON, W.Va. — An inmate was assaulted in the medium-security facility at Hazelton Thursday.

According to a  press release from the facility’s public information officer, at about 7:49 a.m., staff responded to a housing unit after an inmate was assaulted. The inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

“The incident was immediately contained and the institution has returned to normal operations,” according to the release. No staff were injured and at no time was the public in danger, according to the release. An investigation is under way.

FCI Hazelton is a medium-security facility that currently houses 1,447 male offenders.

Attention has focused recently on the high-security penitentiary at the complex, where three men have been killed by other inmates this year. The most recent murder was that of gangster James “Whitey” Bulger. The penitentiary current houses 1,260 men.

The complex also includes a minimum-security camp with 116 inmates and a female facility currently housing  565 women
