Long-time Board of Education member Parsons set to retire

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Long-time Monongalia County Board of Education member Dr. Barbara Parsons will retire this year.

After serving nearly 18 years on the Monongalia County BOE, eight served as president, Dr. Parsons has decided to throw in the towel.

Parsons, a native of Jackson County, W.Va. has been elected to four four-year terms with the BOE and has held the title of president since July 2010.

When asked about her position Parsons had nothing but good things to say.

“I loved this job, I really did,” she said.

Parsons described her position as fun with challenges along the way. Aspects of problem-solving made the job exciting, she said.

The job never lacked support from the community either, according to Parsons.

“Not every county has that,” she said. “So we’ve been really fortunate to be given resources that we can use to address issues.”

Parsons expects the transition of two new Board members and a new superintendent to be challenging, but is hopeful for the new team.

“It’s complicated, but I have great expectations and I think they’ll do very well.”
