Missing Hikers Found Safe in Tucker County

DOLLY SODS, W.Va. — Two women who went missing while hiking in Tucker County have been found safe.

The two identified by family members as Rachel Bonham and Whitney VanBibber, both Kanawha County natives in their early 20s, were located in the Dolly Sods Wilderness area at around 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Recalling the events on social media, one of the women said that the two went hiking for four hours before becoming lost. After attempting to find their way back through the night, they had to brave the cold weather and wind by sleeping in a tree.

Meanwhile, fire crews from Grant and Tucker Counties were put on search detail for nearly 16 hours after receiving a missing persons call.

When the two woke up, they were able to find their way back to the road, where the emergency crews were waiting on them.

Both were determined to have sustained no serious injuries during the ordeal.
