Mon County BOE finalizes FY17 budget

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A decrease in incoming funds, that’s what is to be expected after last night’s Monongalia County Board of Education meeting. The 2016-2017 Mon County School Budget was adopted by the BOE while keeping in mind the potential losses that could increase as State Legislatures work out their budget.

Dr. Frank Devono, Superintendent of the Mon County Board of Ed, expressed concern about the upcoming cuts.

“We’re really concerned we truely are, we are not getting anything from the legislature we haven’t done anything, the rumors that we’re hearing that it’s probably going to be as much for Mon County, because of the loss of pilot money and growth money. So if we lose both of those we’ll be very concerned because that’ll be in addition to the cuts the State Department and Legislature decide to make ”

The expected loss of revenue from the pilot and growth money is expected to be at least $1.4 million.

Devono also gave his frustrations towards legislatures on the lack of progress towards a new state’s budget.

“I’m flaburghasted that nothing has been done up to this point and it’s going to start affecting what programs we can and can’t offer startign July 1st.”

Despite the cuts, Devono assured citizens that it will not make any impact on your pocket book.

“That money will still be appropriated, those taxes will be recieved and used.”

The budget will be looked at again once the final budget is approved at the state legislature.
