Mon County schools deal with flu outbreak

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Schools in Marion and Preston Counties will be closed Friday due to weather and the influenza outbreak.

Doddridge and Greenbreir County schools are also closed. Both are expected to reopen Monday.

Monongalia County Schools deputy superintendent Donna Talerico says some schools are reporting as many as 15 percent of students out with illness.

“We are probably around, at a few schools, as high as 15-percent of the students out with the flu, and that’s about four different schools,”Talerico said,”Every other school is well under that percentage.”

Mon County schools have instituted disinfecting protocol and education to students and staff about limiting transmission of the virus.

Talerico adds that students off school due to illness are not punished in any way.

“We’ve been working with the Monongalia County Health Department, we’re following all the protocols they have issued,”Talerico said,”If you’re sick don’t come to school, stay home.”
