Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department identifies man killed in deputy-involved shooting

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A Monongalia County man is dead after police say he drew a knife on a Sheriff’s deputy while attempting to make an arrest.

John Stewart Jr., 46, is said to have threatened to stab his sister with a knife, leading to the response by police at a mobile home on Mason Dixon Highway Wednesday evening.

Stewart reportedly refused to follow verbal commands. A deputy pepper sprayed Stewart, who then is said to have drawn a knife.

The deputy fired at least one round. Stewart was declared dead at the scene.

The unidentified deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing.
