Morgantown considers diversity initiative

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Morgantown city council members heard from members of the Human Rights Commission about the proposed changes to the Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

Commision member Don Spencer said,”What the Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion does enable the city to do is to establish a foundation for constructive diversity and equity in it’s employees and volunteers.”

At the request of the commission council members will vote on a new policy relating to volunteers and employees and adopt an official mission statement.

Commission member Jan Derry said,”We’ve been a leader in this state and the HRC wants to keep in that field of leading in this action. By ensuring out places of work respect diveristy. Equity is based on transparent fairness in employment practices and inclusion is something that people value and want to work for.”

The goal of the plan is to transform the make up the city workforce and volunteers to reflect the diversity of the city.

The plan also includes diversity management practices to nuture and develop diversity.

To build the plan the commission looked at reasearch projects around the country.

Spencer said,”We’ve looked at several research projects that have measured what has happened in other cities, what things they have done to create and sustain, protect and nurture the diversity so it can allow the creativity and effectiveness to blossom.”

City council will vote on the proposal October 1.
