Morgantown fire chief among nation’s designated chief fire officers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Since 2013, Morgantown’s fire chief has maintained his designation with the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

The city is recognizing Mark Caravasos, a 29 year veteran of the city fire department, for his commitment on the job.

Caravasos is one of 1,132 people nationwide to be designated a Chief Fire Officer.

The city’s fire chief first sought the voluntary designation in October 2013.

“For my purposes, the CFO accreditation process was a natural step forward in my career development,” he explained. “It helped me monitor my educational path and establish a ‘map’ of training that will best assist me with department leadership and personal goal expectations.”

According to a release, to maintain designation, CFOs must show they have continuously developed in four specific areas: professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement.

Caravasos is also an active member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Institute of Fire Service Engineers, West Virginia Professional Fire Chief’s Association and West Virginia State Fire Marshals Association.
