Morgantown man charged after firing shot at apartment with child inside

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A Monongalia County man is facing charges after a drug-related shooting over $70 while a four-year-old girl was present.

Demetreas Jay Cunningham, 26, of Morgantown, has been charged in connection to a November incident where a man was accused of firing off a gun before fleeing in a silver Mercedes at Glen Abbey apartments. He is charged with felony wanton endangerment.

According to the criminal complaint, the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 28 at the complex located close to the intersection of West Run Road and Van Voorhis Road. The victim told police he and Cunningham were friends, but Cunningham allegedly fired the shot over $70 owed for marijuana. The shot went over the victim’s head and did not hit anybody before he fled back into the home. The victim told police he was babysitting a four-year-old girl at the time the shot was fired.

A bullet hole was left in the front door of an apartment. The bullet had traveled through the living room wall into the closet in the kitchen and into the wall above the kitchen sink.

Cunningham is being held in North Central Regional Jail on a $30,000 cash or surety bond.

West Virginia State Police are investigating.
