Morgantown Parking Authority warns about “fake” tickets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It’s unclear if it’s a joke or a scam, but the Morgantown Parking Authority is warning commuters about a number of fake parking tickets that have been left on parked cars.

“We have received calls about fraudulent parking tickets being issued in the Chestnut St. parking areas,” said Dana McKenzie, director of the Morgantown Parking Authority.

The fraudulent parking tickets show that the driver has been fined $100 and failure to pay may result in additional fines, arrest and/or vehicle seizure.

But, in small print at the bottom of the two-sided ticket, there is a message for the likely angry driver.

“…This ticket was issued by a concerned citizen and is not an actual fine. This ticket is for entertainment purposes only.”

If you have received one of the fraudulent tickets, the Parking Authority would like you to call them and disregard the ticket.

Morgantown Police are aware of the situation, according to the City of Morgantown’s Press Office.

“Official parking citations are not hand written and come stuffed in an envelope that clearly state they were issued by the Morgantown Parking Authority,” said McKenzie.

For any questions regarding parking citations or to report a fraudulent ticket contact the Morgantown Parking Authority at 304-284-7435.
