Morgantown Police Dept. shares crime stats upon students’ return

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It is customary for calls to Morgantown Police Department to increase when the seasonal population returns for classes at West Virginia University.

The numbers of calls for service have been released covering the dates between the first day of move in to the end of the first weekend following the first full week of classes.  The dates ran from August 12, 2016 to Aug. 21, 2016.  Police Chief Ed Preston said these are preliminary statistics.

During those ten days, Morgantown police answered 1,823, made 37 arrests and issued 368 criminal citations.

Morgantown Police are investigating a malicious wounding, a second degree sexual assault and a third degree sexual assault.

Ten of the 37 arrests included DUI related charges.

Six of the individuals arrested face charges for obstructing an officer.

Two others were charged with battery on an officer.  Among them was Meghan Losh, 20, who was arrested for public intoxication, underage consumption, disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and battery on an officer after police say she bit two officers.

The eleven people who were accused of public intoxication range in age from 17 years old to 48 years old with the average age being 28 years old.
