Morgantown tax kicks in July 1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The one percent sales and use tax passed by Morgantown City Council in May of 2019 will go into effect on July 1.

The tax is collected by businesses operating in city limits and paid to the West Virginia Tax Department at the same time and manner as the state sales tax.

The sales and use tax comes with a reduction in Business & Occupation taxes for retail, by .05 percent, and service, by .1 percent. The city anticipates approximately $5 million in revenue annually. The funds gathered from the municipal sales and use tax will be used for police and fire pensions, other post-employment benefits, capital infrastructure projects, and capital improvements to BOPARC facilities and parks.

Businesses are encouraged to contact the West Virginia Tax Department at 304-558-3333 or 800-982-8297 for more information or questions about the Municipal Sales and Use Tax.
