Mountaineer Preparedness Weekend set to challenge local Scouts

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Mountaineer Preparedness Weekend is planned for October 7 through 9 at Camp Mountaineer in Monongalia County. The event provides area Scout troops the opportunity to learn a variety of skills from area first responder groups.

Boy Scouts will learn from people from HealthNet Aeromedical Services, Mon EMS, Mountaineer Area Rescue Group, and Monongalia County Health Department’s Threat Preparedness program, according to Monongalia EMS Marketing Coordinator Savanna Leech.

“Get all of the scouts together and really get them out into the wilderness and show them all the different things these organizations of Mon County can do,” Leech said.

“We want to do our part to help show these Boy Scouts and the Scouts of American ways they can be better prepared for situations,” Leech said.

Scouts will see presentations on wilderness care, CPR, search and rescue, EMS duties, Stop the Bleed, radiation safety, medical helicopter capabilities and more.

All of the activities are centered around the Boy Scout theme, Be Prepared.

“It’s something you learn to live by,” Leech said. “And I think that’s a big connection between the Boy Scouts and a lot of these different organizations that are playing a part in this,” Leech said.

For the 100-year history of Boy Scouts, the Be Prepared theme has been the driving force behind offering help to family, neighbors, friends and the greater community.

“Not only can we teach Boy Scouts something, but I think Boy Scouts can teach us a lot of different things as well,” Leech said. ” They’re always doing these different things that have to do with being prepared, being on your own and being independent.”

This event is open to Boy Scouts from any council 11 to 17 years old.
