MUB, Morgantown saunter toward Flegal Dam recreational feature agreement

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The city of Morgantown and MUB are inching closer to a deal for recreational amenities at the Flegal Dam and Reservoir. In a special meeting, the MUB Board of Directors was prepared to vote on the latest version of the agreement, but a revised document was submitted by the city a day before the meeting.

Chairman of the MUB board, J. T. Straface his initial review of the revision does not seem problematic, but more review would be required before a vote can be taken. Additionally, board members pointed out it could take two years to fill the reservoir, so there really isn’t a need to rush into an agreement.

“However, due to the fact the board has not had an opportunity to discuss the potentials revisions, and discuss with the staff I don’t believe we’ll be able to make a decision at this time,” Straface said.

Nearby residents on Cobun Creek Road expressed concern about possible misuse of the property and if law enforcement has sufficient assets to patrol or respond to issues if they were to arise. Resident, Susan Elkin raised the concerns on behalf of her neighbors and added it should be used for its designed purpose- a source of fresh water for MUB customers.

“We’re between two different fire departments and how well those volunteers can come out and help anybody that has a heart attack, a sprained ankle or maybe a drowning,” Elkin said.

Morgantown Mayor Jenny Selin was not prepared to address the public safety issues, but did provide a limited description of what the city is willing to do.

“The city and BOPARC would be responsible for things like trash removal, monitoring and facilities and that they be paid for with these federal funds,” Selin said.

The next regularly scheduled MUB Board of Directors meeting is Tuesday, September 13 at 5 p.m.
