MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A new community center and renovated athletic fields are on the horizon at Mylan Park.
Mountaineer Center, the soon to be new aquatics and track and field center at Mylan Park, is still set to open despite a few delays. The state-of-the-art facility broke ground on construction about 11 months ago and will be opening along with newly renovated baseball fields starting with the track and field portion opening up in the fall.
“Our community vision is to provide facilities that will meet the community recreational need,” said Mylan Park Board President Ron Justice on WAJR’s Morgantown AM.
The track-and-field complex will have an eight lane competition track with a state-of -the-art running surface. This will also include areas for various track-and-field activities and will include a community walking track and a scenic cross country trail.
“It’s going to be a great asset that you can have a track meet going on and the community track will be open,” Justice said. “With walking and events, it’s going to be a great facility.”
The community track and perimeter surface is expected to be open by fall of this year and the indoor facilities are expected to open in Spring 2019. This will be followed by the opening of the state-of-the-art aquatics center. Inside will be a competition 50-meter, eight lane pool and a separate competition diving pool with one and three meter springboards. It will also hold diving platforms ranging from one meter to 10, a seating area for over a thousand people, and an indoor recreation pool.
“In there it’s kind of amazing to look up and see everything and get an idea at how good the project will be at the end of the day,” Justice said.
There will also be an outdoor splash area, patio, and cardio area — all of which is expected to open in Fall 2019.
In addition to the $15 million acquatics center, improvements on baseball and athletic fields is also underway. Currently under construction due to a delayed start from excessive Spring rainstorms, the newly renovated baseball fields on both the upper part and lower part of Mylan Park will be seeing a complete makeover. This will include additional fan seating and eventually a press box. The total cost is $600,000.
“The first thing we had to address was that we have to take care of what we already have, so with that, we were able to add about $280,000 in the upper fields and another $150,000 in the lower fields,” Justice said.
The projects are all expected to be completed by Fall 2019.
