Neurosurgeon dies at 95

robert-nugentMORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A longtime neurosurgeon in Morgantown has passed away. Dr. Robert Nugent was died at his home on Monday at the age of 95.

Nugent joined the West Virginia University Medical Center in 1961 and was named the Chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery in 1970, a position he held until 1985. He was the founding president of the West Virginia Neurosurgical Society and Vice President of the Southern Neurosurgical Society. In 1994, he was named to the Order of Vandalia, the highest award presented at WVU.

During his career, Nugent came up with a technique using small, angled electrodes for more controlled triennial lesion. He personally performed more than 1,600 of these procedures.

There will be a celebration of his life scheduled at the Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown.
