NWS: Monongalia, Preston Counties belted with two inches of rain Wednesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Meteorologist John Darnley with the National Weather Service says Morgantown recorded two inches of rain between 2 and 4 p.m. Darnley said, “We’ve been in a modified tropical air mass for a good week, if not longer. So, our dew points have been extremely high and that just saturates the atmosphere.” Darnley added, “When you add the afternoon heat you get copious amounts of rainfall.”

Officials from M.E.C.C.A. 911 reported localized flooding in the Granville and Brookhaven areas and several roads were restricted due to rising waters. As the rain tapered off, the roads were quickly unrestricted.

In Preston County E911 officials say Union Street in Bruceton Mills was closed for a shor period of time and State Route 26 was also temporarily restricted. No serious damage reports were received.

As the current cold front passes through, dew points will lower and the air mass will become more stable. High temperatures over the next week are forecast to be in the mid to upper 80’s.
