One jailed in connection with Monongalia County church fire

MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with a fire at Monongalia County church.

According to deputies from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, Tylor Fortune admitted to breaking into the church, setting the bathroom in the rear of the building, then leaving when the fire got out of control, and smashing the burglary alarm at the front door while leaving.

When deputies arrived at the Church of Morning Glory on Mason Dixon Highway for a burglar alarm, they observed and smelled smoke and noticed the front window had been broken.

Deputies entered the church and were able to put out the fire, which was a pile of napkins in the rear bathroom.

A witness at the scene described the suspect as a white male with a small, scruffy beard to deputies who were able to identify him at the scene and take him into custody.

Fortune has been charged with arson and is being held in the North Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
