Rain system helps quench the driest spring in nearly 130 years

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. After several days of rain, the current system is moving out after the National Weather Service said 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain fell in the Morgantown area.

Meteorologist Alicia Miller said this system is really just settling the dust and will not provide relief from the drier-than-normal spring.

“We’re about five inches below normal since January and about an inch below normal for June,” Miller said. “So, it will at least get us closer to what we should have for June.”

This week looks like an opportunity to take a break from lawn and garden watering, according to Miller.

“We have an 80 percent chance of showers Tuesday night into Wednesday, so that is the best chance for another measurable rain,” Miller said.

Information from the National Integrated Drought Information System operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports January and May of this year were the driest since 1895.

Forecasters predict high temperatures for next week will be in the high 70s and lows will be in the 50s.
