Red Cross cites low blood inventories, encourages donations with incentives

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. The American Red Cross is urging people to make an appointment to give blood to bridge the gap due to a recent drop in donations. Type O blood donors are especially encouraged to make an appointment.

The drop in inventory comes at a traditional time when inventories fall due to vacations, students returning home, and holiday activities. For example, more than 42 million Americans are expected to travel over the Memorial Day weekend, meaning fewer donors will likely be available to give.

Appointments can be made by using the app, visiting the website, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to schedule an appointment.

The Red Cross is also offering the following incentives for donors:

1. All who come to give through May 31 will receive an exclusive Red Cross beach towel, while supplies last.

2. Donors in May will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to the 2023 MLB® All-Star Game® in Seattle, including two tickets to the 2023 MLB® All-Star Game® thanks to the support of Fanatics, round-trip airfare, four-night hotel accommodations, a $750 gift card, and more.

3. Those who come to give June 1–30 will receive a $10 gift card by email to a merchant of their choice. Plus, they’ll also be automatically entered for a chance to win a backyard theater package including a projector and screen, a projector tripod, a smokeless firepit, an Adirondack chair set, and a movie night snack package.
