Routine traffic stop leads to child neglect charges in Nutter Fort

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – In Harrison County, two are facing charges after police observed a child in a vehicle resting his arm on a backpack that contained presumed dangerous drugs during a routine traffic stop.

On Saturday, officers from the Nutter Fort Police Department conducted a stop in the parking lot of Christine’s Hot Spot on Buckhannon Pike.

When backup units arrived, police said Christopher Hartman, 37, of Parkersburg, attempted to walk away from the vehicle. When he was stopped, he admitted to the police that his license was suspended due to a prior Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge and that he should not have been driving.

Police then asked for and received permission to search Hartman and a passenger, Joseph Hitt, 44, of Bridgeport.

During the search, police found a smoking device that contained presumed fentanyl, a pipe that contained presumed methamphetamine, a bag of methamphetamine, used foil, and marijuana.

Both men have been charged with child neglect and are being held in the North Central Regional Jail.
