Sheriff: Fireworks safety of paramount importance

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Monongalia County Sheriff Perry Palmer says patrons should use common sense when partaking in Fourth of July festivities the next few days.

“I would say this, I would say you need to use your common sense this Fourth of July,” he said. “You need to be aware of your surroundings. There’s going to be lots of people out.”

The use of consumer fireworks within city limits is prohibited by Morgantown City Code, however sparklers and other novelties are permitted, but should be used with caution.

“When it comes to fireworks we hear all these horror stories every year about injuries from setting off fireworks anywhere from people losing limbs to serious burns,” Palmer said. “We want to tell you, you need to be careful.”

Those planning to use fireworks outside of city limits should remember a few safety tips:

  • Only use fireworks in open areas such as fields, away from other houses
  • Be respectful of others’ properties
  • Always have adult supervision

“Sometimes with kids, it can be even as little as using sparklers and getting burned because they’re not familiar with how to use them and everything,” Palmer said.

Palmer asks that adults planning to celebrate the holiday with alcoholic beverages make arrangements for others to drive.

“There’s going to be parties, there’s going to be people consuming alcohol,” he said. “It’s going to be nice, there will be a lot of people at the lake and everything. We’ll have some extra people out running DUIs, just be responsible. If you’re drinking, do not drive. I know its a cliché, but get a designated driver. We want everybody to enjoy and have a safe Fourth of July.”

Anyone who violates the City Code on fireworks can face a fine anywhere from $100 to $500.
