Special meeting for charter school application set for Monday

MORGANTOWN, WVa. – The Monongalia County School Board meets Monday for a public review of the charter school application submitted by the West Virginia Academy.

Governor Jim Justice signed H.B. 206 into law in June of 2019, the measure allows for three charter schools to be opened in the state. For that day, the West Virginia Education Association has expressed an intention to sue in order to block charter schools.

Mon County Schools superintendent Dr. Eddie Campbell has been reviewing the application with board members. The review consisted of questions forwarded to the academy from the board with an opportunity to provide answers. The questions and answers have not yet been made public.

“This is the first time any county has had to do this and I know they have been very cautious,” Campbell said,” They have paid a lot of attention to the details of how this needed to be processed.”

“One in three parents are supportive of charter schools and one in five parents would send their kids to charter schools,” John Treu, president of the West Virginia Academy said,” So, the parents certainly feel like there’s a need.”

“We will have a more rigorous institution in terms of academics,” Treu said,” We will hold both, students and teachers who are in our school accountable.”

The special meeting will be held Monday, November 30 at noon.
