MORGANTOWN W.Va. — The damage is still being assessed after a Sabraton house fire Monday afternoon.

The two-story home on Statler Avenue caught on fire shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters at the nearby Norwood station could see smoke coming from the area from their department. When they arrived, Frank Mellie said flames were showing.

“There was fire damage to one room and then extensive smoke damage to the rest of the house.”

Response from other Morgantown fire companies was slightly hindered because of a detour around the Hartman Run Road Bridge.

“With the bridge down, it did take our other station from Northside a little bit longer to get here,” Mellie explained.

Three engine companies and a ladder company responded with 12 firemen on hand. The fire was under control within 15 minutes.

Mellie and a colleague from Norwood were the first two on the scene.

“We could always use more. With the station out here and the fire being this close to the station, it takes the other companies a little bit longer to get here. So, it was just myself and firefighter Tad Dalton inside for about 5 minutes until the other companies could get here,” Mellie explained.

They had to use force to get inside.

Nobody was home when the fire started.   The city fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
