Suspect indicted in Barbour County torture, kidnapping case

PHILIPPI, W.Va. A grand jury in Barbour County has indicted Sammy Martz, 48, for kidnapping, domestic battery, malicious assault, possession with intent to deliver, and a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

In January, Martz allegedly held a woman against her will and tortured her for several hours. He reportedly threatened to kill her and burned her stomach and leg with a torch.

The victim fled through a window and escaped under a porch to call 911.

Police said a significant amount of methamphetamine, cash, and an unloaded firearm were found in the home.

Martz is expected to be arraigned in Barbour County Circuit Court on May 31.
