Thanksgiving organizer praises spirit of volunteers during holiday season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Another major increase in meals served sets the stage for next Thanksgiving — the ten year anniversary of the Wesley United Church’s Community Thanksgiving.

“It’s more than just Wesley Church,” organizer Karen Kelly King said this week on Morgantown AM. “The more you get involved, the more people who donate, the more people who serve take ownership of it. And they care whether or not it succeeds.”

She counted at least 567 meals served, but said the final number might be a little higher.

“It’s just a glorious day,” King said. “We have so much to be thankful for. And, to see the people come out, I’m just in awe.”

King said it’s made possible by the countless volunteers who show up on Thanksgiving.

“Community Service is not dependent upon time necessarily,” she said. “It’s not dependent upon money. What it is dependent on is commitment.”

In particular, she praised the kitchen staff for their tireless efforts.

“They work hard,” she said. “They stand on their feet for three or four days, doing all of this stuff, and telling all of us what to do. And we couldn’t do it without their sacrifice. There is no way.”
