Threats of violence in Morgantown not credible, according to police

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Morgantown Police Department is tracking rumors on social media and other platforms regarding potential protests that may lead to violence or harm within our community and has found they are untrue.

Morgantown Police Chief Eric Powell said the speculation has generated several calls to the dispatch center.

“This threat is not credible in any way,” Powell said. “I want to reassure people that there is no credibility to the social media post.”

Powell said because there is no imminent threat, no extraordinary measures are being taken.

“We are focusing our efforts on specific areas and providing some extra eyes on places we think might have problems,” Powell said.

Powell said the post refers to the Hamas call for a “Day of Rage,” and many calls to the department have come from concerned parents of students at West Virginia University.

The Morgantown Police Department understands the potential for violence in the political climate and is actively monitoring the situation. But Powell encourages people to seek news and updates from credible sources and guard against misinformation.

If anyone comes across credible information related to potential protests or any other matter that may impact public safety, please contact the Morgantown Police Department at 304-284-7522 or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
