WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump signed the tax reform bill into law Friday morning in the Oval Office before leaving for Florida for the holidays.
Trump said he wanted to keep his promise to sign the $1.5 trillion tax code rewrite before Christmas.
“Everything in here is really tremendous things for businesses, for people, for the middle class, for workers. And I consider this very much a bill for the middle class and a bill for jobs. Corporations are literally going wild over this,” Trump said.
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who voted for the bill earlier this week, tweeted her response right after the signing.
“Signed. Sealed. Delivered. President Trump just made it official—West Virginians and Americans across the country are getting tax relief this holiday season and will enjoy the many benefits for years to come. Very exciting day!”
Trump said Americans would begin seeing more money in their paychecks by February.
Capito’s weekly video message called tax reform a “huge victory” for state residents.
“Because it means West Virginians like you can keep more of your money,” Capito said.
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, who voted against the bill, did not dispute the likelihood of tax savings for many West Virginians — initially.
“I think there is going to benefit from the get-go which is what we call the ‘sugar high.’” It won’t last, he said during an appearance on Wednesday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”
