Two charged in Morgantown fatal overdose

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –  Two people have been charged in Monongalia County in connection with a deadly overdose in January 2023.

Deputies were called to an apartment at Viewcrest Village for a cardiac arrest but found four overdose victims upon arrival. Police thought the group was using suspected cocaine, but a lab test determined the substance was fentanyl.

Three of the subjects were taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and were later released. The fourth subject, Brandy Lee Evans, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy determined Evans cause of death was fentanyl intoxication.

Detectives from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department used cellphone data, geolocation data, and witness statements to determine that William James McCuskey, 43, of Morgantown, called the person who sold them the drugs, Aamyiah Michelle Pugh, 22, of Morgantown, to bring Narcan and assist in cleaning up the scene rather than calling for help immediately.

McCuskey is charged with failure to render aid.

Pugh, who is suspected of selling the drugs, is charged with drug delivery resulting in death.

Preliminary hearings are scheduled for April 15.
