Tygart River spill under investigation in Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – In Elkins, officials are looking for the person responsible for dumping diesel fuel in the Tygart River, the source of drinking water for the town.

Elkins Water operators believe someone spilled the fuel Friday near Fifteenth Street causing an oily sheen on the river. Unconfirmed reports indicate the fuel may have been dumped into a nearby storm drain.

Officials say none of contaminants reached the treatment or water system.

Residents are being reminded the storm drains in the city go directly to the river with no treatment. Petroleum products can be disposed of at most auto parts stores.
