United Way of Mon and Preston Counties chips away at campaign goal

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties held a Seventh-Inning Stretch 2023 Campaign Progress Report Wednesday. A celebration was held at the Monongalia County Ballpark featuring United Way 2023 Campaign co-chairs Brooke Brown, wife of WVU Head Football Coach Neal Brown; Amanda Mazey, wife WVU Baseball Coach Randy Mazey; Lindsay Hammond, wife of WVU Rifle Team Coach Jon Hammond and Kate Covich, wife of WVU Golf Coach Sean Covich.

“We are at 52-percent of the $1.3 million goal,” Covich said. “We’re at $671.065 dollars, so we’re rounding second, coming to third, headed home and excited to hit this one out of the park.”

All donations matter and he smallest donations add up to make the biggest impact as the campaign winds down, according to Covich. She also encouraged people would like to make continuing donation to contact their employer to see if participate in the payroll deduction program.

“We’ve said from the beginning it’s the $1, $5, $10 and $20 that’s going to get us to that goal and especially a company that offers payroll deduction,” Covich said.

The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties directly supports 27 agencies through the two counties and initiatives like the Helpful Harvest Food Program, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and free tax preparation for those who qualify.

“There are a lot of families that if they don’t have the resources that the United Way provides they wouldn’t make it,” Covich said. “And it’s a lot of families and people that you and I come in contact with every single day.”

The organization also supports partners that provide youth programs and important vital services for some of the most needy in our community.

“The Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Christian Help and community kitchens throughout town that really do such an important job in our community to make it special.”

Covich said unlike other organizations the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties is truly a local organization- the money raised here helps the people and improves the quality of life in your community.

“I always like to let people know that of that $1.3 million- 100-percent of the money that goes to that goal stays in Mon and Preston Counties,” Covich said.
