Water problems force The Shack to close temporarily

PURSGLOVE, W.Va. – The extreme cold period during the Christmas break has also claimed The Shack Neighborhood House as a victim. Administrative Assistant Angel Mullen said several pipes ruptured, forcing the organization to close for several weeks while repairs are made.

“Revenues from parties and community events go back into our programs, which help our community,” Mullen said. “Because of this, we haven’t been able to do events this month, and we’re not even sure if we’ll be able to do events in February.”

Now, everything from birthday parties to community events to roller skating Mullen said the roller skating events are very popular and draw as many as 70 people.

“We are one of the only places available around here to do roller skating and things like that, so it takes away a community event that families can bring their children to and hang out with them,” Mullen said.

Mullen said they are always willing to accept cash donations to help defray the costs of water system repairs. Also, she said there are external programs that support the community that residents can make donations to.

“If anybody wanted to bring in used hats or gloves, we could take those,” Mullen said. “If anybody wanted to bring in hygiene products, we can take those because we have “take what you need” boxes outside The Shack.”

Mullen said they have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, and Instagram, and she encourages residents to follow progress or reach out to make donations there.

“We will always reach out for help and/or specific donations there,” Mullen said. “So, when people follow us on there and share our information, it really helps us because we’re getting a wider range of the community.”

The next scheduled events are a 5K run on March 25 and the 2nd Annual Elimination Dinner on April 29.

“More information on that will be posted on our social media when we have (5k)registration up,” Mullen said. “But, we are very excited for that and that’s another way we can raise money for our programs is with this 5k.”
