Wintery start to the holiday week with a warm finish

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – MetroNews Accuweather has laid out an unsettled forecast for the next few days with a warming trend through the holiday weekend.

On WAJR’s “Talk of the Town,” meteorologist Jeff Nordean said the immediate threat is precipitation, wind, and falling temperatures.

“From here all the way through tomorrow morning (Tuesday), be aware that the roads could be bad at any moment,” Nordean said. “But, right now, it’s simple flurries that are showing up on radar.”

Nordean said the chance of precipitation is 80 percent Monday and increases to 100 percent tonight. According to Nordean, 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected in the Morgantown area, and that forecast is 6 to 12 inches to the east in the mountainous areas.

“We could see some snow squalls, and those can bring whiteout conditions, reduce visibility, and create slick spots,” Norden said. “All of this results in slower travel.”

Winds will increase throughout the day Monday to possibly as high as 30 miles per hour. Add in the possibility of snow squalls, and Nordean said afternoon and evening travel could become hazardous.

“Winds have already been gusting up to 20 miles per hour, but we’re going to be looking at the potential of even stronger winds with these squalls that push through,” Nordean said.

Nordean said once the system passes through, a high-pressure system will take control, bringing clear skies and warmer than normal temperatures to the area.

“We’re going to go from the mid to low 30’s for the high and all the way up to near 50 coming up as we head to the holiday weekend,” Nordean said.
