Worker killed at former Preston Co. mine site

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — A contract worker helping install a water treatment system at the former Decondor Coal site in Preston County reportedly died on the job Tuesday.

According to a spokesperson for the WV Department of Environmental Protection Office of Special Reclamation, a Sutton, WV company had been working on the system since March.

The DEP had been informed Tuesday afternoon that a man was killed after a ditch caved in during excavation work.

When a mining permit for the location was revoked, reclamation work there fell to the state.

Local police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
