WVU students prepare for Monday classes in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Residence halls on the Morgantown campus of WVU will open Saturday, and classes for the spring 2023 campaign begin Monday, January 9.

Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Education Evan Widders said residents will quickly see traffic build this weekend for roads and businesses as students and families travel to Morgantown.

“You’re definitely going to see traffic increasing today and also tomorrow as students come back into town and get situated in their dorm rooms, then classes begin Monday,” Widders said.

First-generation college students or the first student from a family to attend a higher education institution, get some extra assistance to start the semester. In 2022, WVU received the First-Generation Forward Designation from the Center for First-Generation Student Success, an initiative of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation.

“It’s important to connect them early on with a counselor who can help them not only academically but also with financial aid,” Widders said.”And the transition to what many students consider a large town in Morgantown.”

In the spring semester, nearly 20,000 undergraduate students on the Morgantown campus will have 130 academic programs to choose from.

“All of our engineering programs are really well received and well thought of, and if students are interested in engineering, the jobs are there,” Widders said.

Widders said the spring semester is a little less stressful for most students. But this spring, the campus will welcome 100 new students and 150 transfer students to the Morgantown campus for the first time.

“The majority of the first-year students have become accustomed to college at this point; they know where the buildings are and they know how to use the computer system,” Widders said. “So, there is generally less confusion and more business as usual.”

Spring recess is scheduled for March 10 through March 19, and residence halls will close for the spring semester on May 6.
