Apartment damaged in downtown Morgantown fire

IMG_20170921_193623MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — An apartment at the intersection of Spruce Street and Walnut Street was damaged in a fire early Thursday evening.

The fire began around 6:45 p.m. in an apartment above the Blue Moose Cafe.

Morgantown Fire Chief Mark Caravasos confirmed the fire was not suspicious in nature, but said the origin remained unknown. The Fire Marshal’s will be called into investigate the source.

Caravsos said the resident of the apartment was in his bedroom, smelled smoke, opened his door, and was met with a wall of smoke.

The building is not expected to be a total loss.

“We’re not going to have too much of a problem with that,” Caravasos said.

Firefighters were still putting out hotspots approximately one hour after the fire began.

Traffic was closed at the intersection of Pleasant Street and Spruce Street.
