Former WVU basketball player acquitted in Greek rape case

CLARKSBURG, W.Va.– A former West Virginia University basketball player has been acquitted of rape charges while playing professionally in Greece.

Brian Casey Mitchell was accused of raping a Danish tourist in 2011, and an arrest warrant was issued in 2013. After the Greek government submitted a formal request, Mitchell was extradited back to Greece in August 2022.

Mitchell’s attorney in Greece released the following statement to MetroNews:

I can confirm that Mr. Brian Casey Mitchell has been declared innocent of all charges unanimously by both the court and the jury (in Greece we have a mixed court of 3 judges and 4 people for the jury). He is free and returning to the states in the next couple of days.

Mitchell was on the 2009-10 and 2010-11 WVU basketball rosters after transferring to Morgantown from Chipola College.
