Local United Way launches 80th annual fundraising campaign

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The United Way of Monongalia and Preston County kicked off their 80th annual fundraising campaign Tuesday morning.

“You know at the end of the day, they make our communities a better place to live,” said Lydotta Taylor, who serves on the Board of Directors for the local United Way.”They’ve helped those who really need help the most.”

During the 2017 campaign, the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties has raised nearly $1.6 million dollars in an effort to support dozens of programs and agencies that operate throughout the two counties.

“54 programs and 29 health and human service agencies with our most recent funding,” Taylor said. “So that’s a lot of programs and a lot of agencies in two communities.”

Taylor said the United Way plays a vital role in making sure donated money gets to the right place through a process called “citizen review.” Fortunately, Taylor says local organizations continue to put themselves in a good position to handle money that comes in.

“Most agencies are doing a fabulous job in really serving the needs in our community, but the citizen’s review process really helps just formalize everything so that everyone who donates to the United Way can know that the dollars are being used for those that are in need.”

“I could just go on and on if you would like, but just a lot of great agencies out there serving a wide variety of needs in our community.”
